UCCW Skins of the Week

Posted On // Leave a Comment

With Wade taking care of more important matters, I’ve taken over for his weekly favorite skins post. Hopefully I’ll be able to deliver as well as he has in the past. I have a couple different resources for when I’m on the hunt for skins so this post will be taking you places you may have never been before. Nothing to be scared of though, unless you fear the unknown, in which case pop a xanax and read on for this weeks hottest UCCW skins.

First up on the list is "Blissful" by In2uition. This skin brings the awesomeness of UCCW to light with three widgets that define minimal. From the tiny icons in the status bar, to the artist color choice, these skins are sure to spruce up any dull homescreen.

The newest skins by justreveal.net member kgill7, “TABD”, were an easy pick. I’ve been a fan of his work for some time now. TABD offers clock and date, weather and a neatly organized shortcuts skin. Done in his traditional style, “eye candy” is an understatement. He’s also released the skin as an installer package with editable hotspots. Download TABD.

As if you haven’t noticed a pattern here yet, I’m into minimal, as well as monochromatic designs. Holler! UCCW by yackovsky satisfies both. With four clocks in two colors (black and white) and modifiable clock formats and hotspots, these are full on clock widgets. Best of all they’re free!

If minimal isn’t your thing and you dig groovy colors, then head over to deviantart and check out the “Classic Fence Android Theme” by Matteo Oliviari. This pack of skins will bring you back to a more simple time. Retro haters be damned!

Rainmeter is an awesome application for the windows OS, it allows awesome Android-like widgets to your desktop. Recently I’ve been noticing more cross-over ports of UCCW and Rainmeter. Which I think is way cool. One shining example is a port of the rainmeter clock “Robotos” by ErikFx over on deviant art, by Frostroomhead.

If elegant geometric skins are your style, “DIA UCCW” by Obeythe10 is what you’re looking for. For a buck you get two diamond shaped clocks with all the pertinent info that goes perfect on a locker or a desktop. Get  it on Google Play.

Ubuntu G Tutorial

Posted On // 33 comments

In this tutorial we'll be setting up the Ubuntu g theme. This tutorial assumes your device has a resolution of 480x800.

Firs off, download the source files here
Having trouble getting the files? Try this link. (mirror 1)
Just in case  (mirror 2)

Next, you're going to need a few different apps,

1. Apex Launcher
2. Tasker
3. Minimalistic Text
4. UCCW
5. WidgetLocker
6. Multipicture Live Wallpaper
7. Also install "Ubuntu g Uccw.apk" found in the source files. (under system settings go to security then check unknown sources)

OK, now that you have those installed, select apex launcher as your default launcher. Then open up widget locker because that's where we're going to start.
one of the many possibilities.
Under settings in widget locker, set the grid to 10x10 and pull the "anchor" all the way down.
Then select "use alternative wallpaper" and choose ubuntuLock from your sd card. Do not crop it.

From there add a 4x4 UCCW widget and select any one of the ubuntuBattGauge skins. Resize it to fit. (If you can't resize check the advanced settings in widgetlocker.)

Next add a 5x2 Uccw widget and select ubuntuLockClock. Place it near the top of the screen.

Now for the Tap to unlock. Select the default widgetlocker slider. In the edit screen slide the left slider over and select disable. Now do the same for the right slider. Next tap the middle and select "widgetlocker options", unlock. Finally, switch tabs to change the icon to the lock.png image. Remember to tap "done" in the top left otherwise you'll have to do it over again.
Now, if you want to have system output widgets on top of the battery widget, those are the minimalistic text preference files. Move those to the minimalistic text preferences folder on your sdcard. Then add a 3x1 MT widget and scroll down to the bottom of the configuration page and select restore. Pick which one you'd like. Then resize it by stretching it up and over top of the center UCCW widget. From there you can set shortcuts for those widgets back in the MT config menu.

Onto the first homescreen.

Apex settings are as follows:

HOMESCREEN
 Portrait grid: 9x6
No margins
Transition effect: none
Hide notification bar, app labels and shadows.

BEHAVIOR SETTINGS
Swipe up: app drawer
Swipe Down: notifications

ADVANCED SETTINGS
Check overlapping widgets.

DOCK SETTINGS
Hide dock. :)

For the wallpaper choose Multipic Live Wallpaper and click add individual settings.
For screen one setthe picture source to a single picture then select ubuntuHomeScreen1.
Add settings for screens 2 and 3 as well.

For the dockbar, you can add your shortcuts however you see fit. By uccw hotspots, desktop visualizer and a transparent icon, edit the apps icon to be transparent. Really, it's up to you. :) I still use desktop visualizer.

Screen 2

Add a UCCW 5x2 widget to the screen selecting the ubuntuHomeClock.
Resize it to fit.

(Note: the message widget is a combo of the tasker profile provided and minimalistic text. Tasker is not free. I will not send it to you. If you have purchased it, add the smsRecieved.xml file to the profiles folder. Open tasker and run the profile. Add the text by using the locale variable in minimalistic text. I'll make aseperate tutorial for that if there's enough demand.)

Long press over the all apps button and add two apex action "app drawers" side by side. Then edit the icons to be transparent, by long pressing the icon, then tap the icon in the next dialog box. And navigate to the blank.png and select it. Repeat for the other one.

After adding your shortcuts, overlap them to app drawer, long press, and tap, "send to back" so that the app drawer shortcuts are always on top in that particular area.

The bottom of the screen can be used as a battery bar by adding the ubuntuBottomBattery skin, strectch to the bottom, send to back.

On to the 3rd screen

Set it up the same way as the other screens. Using your preffered shortcut method. Just make sure to make all icons transparent.

Also, down at the bottom I replaced the battery bar with the running apps shortcut. This is another one of Apex launchers actions.

Add as many as you want to the bottom and edit them with the blank icon.

Thanks for reading. Expect updates soon, i'm currently working on an "events" screen and a "news and weather" page. Stay tuned for more!

Update, my service was shut off so my ideas for this theme will have to wait until I can afford phone service again. This project has not been abandoned!

Currently Android

This theme was inspired by the design of "Degrees" by Stuart Regan
I hope to have made this as easy as possible to emulate.
First off download the files here (mirror 1) (mirror 2) and make sure you have Multipicture  Live Wallpaper installed on your device.

Set Apex settings to the following:
  • 3 Screens
  • 8x5 grid
  • Margins set to none
  • No transition effect
  • Hide notification bar
  • Hide dock
Set MPLWP settings to the following:
  • 3 screens
  • set screen one to "currentlyData"
  • set screen 2 to "currentlyHome"
  • set screen 3 to "currentlyWeather"
  • set transition effect to slide.
  • you may need to play around with the advanced settings to get the screens right. It really depends on your device.
When placing the "jump to screen" and "app drawer" buttons make sure to add the widgets first, resize to make room, then place the button. Resize the widget to overlap then long press widget and select "send to back"

Google, do I need an umbrella? (tutorial)

Posted On // 3 comments

This is a tutorial for Android customization, before we get started you should be familiar with a few apps
Note: this is setup for a device with the resolution of 960x800

Multipicture Live Wallpaper, for this setup this app is for wallpaper cropping only, it has many more useful functions, but for now, we'll keep it simple.
Apex Launcher, I switched from Nova for this one simply because i can have a bigger grid.
Minimalistic text
UCCW(Ultimate Custom Clock Widget) The weather API is broken so Beautiful Widgets is a great alternative for the weather app for now.
Desktop VisualizeR
You can download the Icons here

Okay now that you're ready to go, start off by clearing your homescreen of any icons or widgets currently there.  Then go to Apex settings and apply the following:

1. Homescreen settings;
     Grid 10x8
     Margins=none
     one homescreen
     hide desktop indicator
     hide notification bar
     hide shadows
     hide icon lablels.

2. Drawer settings;
these are entirely up to you

3. Dock settings;
hide it, you won't be using it.
4. Behavior settings;
     Swipe down=notification panel
     double tap=app drawer
5. Advanced;
     Resize any widget=true
     allow widget overlapping
     keep in memory

Now that that's all out of the way, set the wallpaper using Multipicture live wallpaper. (This app is fun to learn)

This is what it looks like before adding any widgets.  You can start where you'd like to, but I prefer working top to bottom left to right. First to be added is WP7_Clock minimalistic text widget 2x1.  Next add the Calendar minimalistic text 3x1.

Now add a Desktop Visualizer widget 4x4 and resize over the image.  I use this as a shortcut to my gallery using the blank.png provided.

The next step can be done two ways. I use simi folder widget and desktop visualizer together to create folders.  You, however, may want to just add apps to the screen in folders and edit the icon by long pressing and selecting the blank.png.

The folders, for me, are from l to r "Games", "Social", "Superuser", and "Google"

Next add whatever weather widget you want to the white box area.  I'll include the UCCW files for my weather setup, just remember you can't use them until the weather issue is sorted out.  (The icons for beautiful widgets im using are google now by marcus)

Almost done, hang in there!

Now add the UCCW widget dockNotification 5x1 to the bottom of the screen keeping a 1x1 space on either side.

Lastly add a phone shortcut to bottom-left and app-drawer shortcut to bottom-right, edit both with the blank.png and you're set!

I'll include a lockscreen wallpaper(the inverse of "Grey Box") refer to my first tutorial on setting it up.

Thanks for reading and I hope you learned something!  Happy customizing!

Grey Box tutorial

Posted On // 14 comments

To get this setup you should be familiar with a few different apps.  Ultimate Custom Clock Widget (UCCW)WidgetLockerDesktop Visualizer, and Minimalistic Text.

This setup is based off of a 960x800 screen resolution. Note: I use Nova Launcher(Prime) with a grid of 7x7
WidgetLocker grid is 10 x 9

First, the homescreen.

Nova settings:
margins = none
hidden status bar
set the wallpaper scrolling to off
scroll effect = none
animation speeds = faster than light
resize all widgets
label icons = negative
WIDGETS OVERLAP! (important one
Set your wallpaper to the png provided.
at the bottom of the scree add uccw batt&calls skin 5x2 and resize like in the pic above.

Next add unread uccw skin 4x4 resized like in the pic above.

Note: add the "games" skin to the exact opposite side of screen and size the same way.

Add the plain weather uccw 4x4 resized.

The social share icon is just all my social apps in a folder with the folder icon changed to the blank png, the other corners are just system icons replaced with the blank one also.
The google icons at the top are two desktop visualizer icons sized accordingly and also use the blank icon.

Onto the Lockscreen:

Widget Locker settings:

Layout, automatically determine grid size = negative
10x9 no "anchor points"
Hide icons and statusbar
allow widgets to overlap

add the notification and lock weather skins as 5x1's and resize like above.

the clock and top uccw are 5x2 and resize to perfectly fit the wallpaper.

you'll notice when placing the white box slider there is no background, that is because I can't wrap my head around 3 & 9 patch images ;)

Download the wallz, psd's, skins and widgetlocker theme here!
